Personal Mobile Device Policy

St. Joseph High School Personal Mobile Device Policy:

  1. Personal Mobile Device’s  must be ‘off and away’ during all instructional times in St. Joseph High School and school sponsored events .  If any device is seen or heard during these times, the student will be asked to take their PMD to the office where it will be locked in the PMD lockers.  
    1. PMDs tucked in clothing where they are still visible violate our policy.
    2. Mobile devices are not to be used in settings such as change rooms, washrooms, or private offices that have the potential to violate a person’s reasonable expectation of privacy. 
    3. PMDs are not to be taken into test or examination settings.
  2. Delivered devices to the PMD lockers will be returned to students at the end of the day in the first and second instances.  Should there be a third occurrence, the device will be confiscated and a call will be made home requiring a parent/guardian to collect the child’s device.
    1. Schools have the right and authority to temporarily confiscate, restrict and/or prohibit PMDs usage while individuals are on school property and/or in attendance at school sponsored activities.
    2. After three offences, should this continue to be a challenge, further discipline may follow.
      1. Prohibition of device on school property
      2. Detention, and or suspension
  3. Students are still able to use their devices prior to school, during lunch, during breaks and after school. We would appreciate it if you would contact your child during these times.
  4. The Principal may authorize a specific use of a PMD during the school day based on the educational needs of the student or in the event of an emergency.  Students being provided PMD accommodations will be outlined in student alerts in PowerSchool.
  5. Teachers will ensure students have use of Internet services via division owned devices in class and will also provide the appropriate level of supervision and digital citizenship instruction to ensure that Division procedures are followed.
